This International Women’s Day, we remember and celebrate the strong, powerful, and courageous women that have fought for equal rights and have voiced their opinions about gender equality, pay disparities, the #MeToo movement, and violence against women.
March 8, 2020 marks International Women’s Day, an annual global event celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This year’s theme will be #EachforEqual, which speaks to working collectively to help create a gender equal world by actively challenging stereotypes, fighting bias, broadening perceptions, and improving situations and celebrating women’s achievements.
The first International Women’s Day was first established in 1911. It initially formed after thousands of female garment workers went on strike and marched in protest against their working conditions in New York City in February of 1908, according to TIME Magazine. The protest was led by women’s rights advocate, Clara Setkin. The large gathering later turned into an international movement to advocate for universal suffrage and women’s rights.
